Inside elder hate groups on Facebook: Day 1, Update

This is a follow-up from a previous post of an investigation in Facebook elder hate groups.

Also see part 1 part 4, and part 5 of this series.

After browsing in 20 or so of hate groups against older adults (with more than 30 members), I have made a few more observations.

  1. People in these groups are high school or college students almost exclusively (although this is probably because Facebook are populated mostly by people in these demographics)
  2. The bitterness are specifically towards driving style because they think older people drive too slow.
  3. None of the groups I have seen so far have an active discussion, even groups with over 100 members. ThGenerally, there is one new message in a month or two by new members. I guess there can be only so much that can be said.
  4. These groups are considered as inside jokes to them. Many of the groups are listed in the “Just For Fun” category too.

One of the names of the groups which I find intriguing is “Humans Against The Elderly” (H.A.T.E.). At least someone realizes what they are broadcasting.

In another hate group called “Old people are useless”, someone said, “It may be a joke man, but be careful cuz ur gonna be old one day...” My immediate thought, "finally, someone with a brain!" Here is the group creator's response:

When I'm old, I'm going to drive at least 20 over the speed limit, steal all the time, and when I finally hit that point where I can't drive or steal anymore, I'm going to find some place where I can't bother anyone (florida), and just die there.

I feel sad for him.

In tomorrow's post, I will examine some of the more hostile groups and discussions.
